Vol. 155 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Kerry Bog Roads.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the turbary roads in the Rathmore section of the Kenmare estate, County Kerry, are in a bad state, and, if so, whether he is prepared to allocate a grant to enable repairs to be carried out.

The Land Commission have already spent £16,000 on the development and regulation of turbary, including the construction and repair of roads, in the Rathmore section of the Kenmare estate. They are not responsible for the continued maintenance of these roads and do not propose to provide funds for the purpose.

In accordance with the turbary regulations, which have been made in regard to the bog, responsibility for the future upkeep of the roads rests with the authorised turf cutters. If the work referred to by the Deputy is beyond their capacity it is open to them to apply to the special employment schemes office for assistance.
