Vol. 155 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soil Testing Unit.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the importance of achieving results in the field of national production and the desirability of extending scientific processes and specialised training, he is prepared to consider the establishment of a soil testing unit to be attached to the dairy science faculty at University College, Cork, and which will cater for the south-western counties.

I am satisfied that the national interest is best served by continuing to concentrate the State soil testing service at Johnstown Castle Agricultural College. The laboratory facilities for this work at Johnstown Castle have been extended from time to time and are at present being further extended to keep pace with the growing demand. In the circumstances, I do not propose to consider the establishment of soil testing units elsewhere.
