Vol. 156 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Dead Meat Freightage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the increases in freightage for the cross-Channel transport of dead meat, which were made on 1st July, 1955, have been rescinded by all companies in respect of all lines with the exception of the Rosslare-Fishguard line, and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

In connection with a general increase in cross-Channel freight rates on 1st July, 1955, an increase of approximately 7½ per cent. was proposed in the carcase meat freight rate but, as a result of representations by the Irish Fresh Meat Exporters' Committee, the Irish and British Traffic Conference agreed in principle that the individual cross-Channel shipping companies might modify the increase in the carcase meat freight rate to 2½ per cent. This modification was made in respect of a number of routes, the Rosslare-Fishguard route being included in the remainder in respect of which no modification has so far been made. The Irish Fresh Meat Exporters' Committee are still pressing the matter with the shipping companies on these latter routes.

In January last, I initiated discussions between the official and trade interests concerned, including the Irish Fresh Meat Exporters' Committee and the Irish and British Traffic Conference, about improving the position generally as regards cross-Channel freight charges and delivery services for carcase meat. A further discussion about this is due to be held shortly.
