Vol. 156 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Mineral Deposits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that in various parts of South Kerry there are rich deposits of copper ore, and, if so, if he will arrange to have the area surveyed by experts with a view to its economic development.

I am aware that there are deposits of copper in South Kerry. These deposits have already been surveyed by the Geological Survey and the results of these surveys are available for inspection by interested persons. The Deputy will appreciate that the exploration and development of mineral deposits are matters for private enterprise and, under the Minerals Development Act, 1940, I am empowered to grant to persons, possessing adequate financial and technical resources, facilities for the exploration, development and working of mineral deposits.

I may add that private interests are in touch with my Department in regard to the grant of facilities for certain areas in South Kerry and certain applications for facilities are under examination.
