Vol. 156 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Transfers.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state (a) the reasons for the transfer to the Reserve in 1940 of nine men of the ordnance survey service, who at that time had more than 15 years' service, and if he will specify the Army regulations under which the transfer was effected, and (b) the grounds on which his Department discharged these men from the Reserve on 21st January, 1948, at which date their time had not expired.

(a) Ten men of the Ordnance Survey Company of the Corps of Engineers were transferred to the Reserve on 1st August, 1940, at their own request in order to enable them to take up civilian employment. The transfer was not in accordance with Defence Force Regulations; the more correct procedure would have been to discharge them. (b) The men in question were finally discharged from the Defence Forces on various dates in 1947 and 1948 on the expiration of the terms of service for which they had engaged.
