Vol. 156 No. 11

Opticians Bill, 1955—From the Seanad.

The Dáil went into Committee to consider amendments from the Seanad.

There are five amendments altogether from the Seanad. The first four are, in fact, one amendment. They refer to Sections 26 and 35 of the Bill and propose the deletion of an additional condition contained in the sections that, on the establishment day, the optician should be a citizen of Ireland. The Seanad has deleted that condition. The first four amendments, therefore, all follow from the same proposal: they are consequential.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in amendment No. 1:—

In sub-section (2), page 10, lines 1 and 2, "conditions that, on the establishment day, he was a citizen of Ireland and" deleted and "condition" substituted.

Question put and agreed to.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in amendment No. 2:—

In sub-section (3), page 10, lines 10 and 11, "conditions that on the establishment day, he was a citizen of Ireland and" deleted and "condition" substituted.

Question put and agreed to.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in amendment No. 3:—

In sub-section (3), page 12, lines 22 and 23, "conditions that, on the establishment day, he was a citizen of Ireland and" deleted and "condition" substituted.

Question put and agreed to.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in amendment No. 4:—

In sub-section (4), page 12, lines 30 and 31, "conditions that, on the establishment day, he was a citizen of Ireland and" deleted and "condition" substituted.

Question put and agreed to.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in amendment No. 5:—

In page 17, "or the provision of orthoptic treatment" inserted before "by" in sub-section (1) (b), line 5, and before "by" in sub-section (2) (b), line 25.

This is to ensure that an ophthalmic optician entitled to engage in orthoptic treatment shall not advertise. It is an amendment to Section 52, and, again, an amendment which was accepted in the Seanad.

Question put and agreed to.
Amendments reported and agreed to.
Ordered: That Seanad Eireann be notified accordingly.
