Vol. 157 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of persons who emigrated in 1953 and 1954, giving particulars of inward and outward passenger movements by sea, rail, road and air.

As has been explained on many occasions, it has not been found possible to devise a satisfactory method of measuring annual emigration, and therefore I am not in a position to give particulars of the number of persons who emigrated in 1953 and 1954. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving particulars of the inward and outward passenger movement by sea, rail, road (motor omnibus services) and air for 1953 and 1954.

Following is the statement:—

PASSENGER MOVEMENT INWARD AND OUTWARD BY SEA, RAIL, ROAD AND AIR FOR THE YEARS 1953 AND 1954.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each of the years 1952 to 1955 the number of persons who received passports to go to employment and permanent residence outside the State.

In the year 1952 there were 4,563 persons who received new passports to go to employment and permanent residence abroad. The corresponding number in 1953 was 6,083, in 1954 it was 6,150 and in 1955 it was 5,700.
