Vol. 157 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Shipping.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the names of the vessels owned by Irish Shipping, Limited, which entered the port of Limerick in each of the years 1952 to 1955; and the amount and value of cargo discharged in respect of each shipment, and the port of origin of such cargo.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the names of the vessels owned by Irish Shipping, Limited, which arrived at the port of Limerick in each of the years 1952 to 1955 and, in respect of each vessel, the month of each arrival, the particulars of the voyage, the type of cargo carried and the tonnage thereof discharged. The value of the cargo discharged, by each vessel is not available since in the compilation of statistics of the values of imports particulars of the vessels in question are not separately distinguished.

Following is the statement:—

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the registered names of all ships owned by Irish Shipping, Limited, and the names of the vessels which are capable of entering the port of Limerick.

The registered names of the vessels owned by Irish Shipping, Limited, are as follows:—

Irish Fern, Irish Heather, Irish Rose, Irish Holly, Irish Oak, Irish Pine, Irish Cedar, Irish Hazel, Irish Plane, Irish Elm.

The size of vessels which can be accommodated with safety at a port is determined by the harbour authority concerned. I understand, however, that the first four named vessels of Irish Shipping, Limited, can use the port of Limerick fully laden and that the other six can use the port as a second port of call, or if lightened.
