Vol. 157 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigrants' Children's Allowances.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that Irish emigrants to Great Britain are subject to a residential qualification of six months before qualifying for children's allowances there, and, if so, whether, in view of the fact that British citizens are not subject to such qualification here, he will take steps to have the anomaly removed.

I am aware that there is a residence qualification for the receipt of family allowance in Great Britain. That qualification is applicable not only to Irish citizens but also, with certain exceptions, to British subjects born outside the United Kingdom. As there is no discrimination against Irish citizens in the matter I do not propose to take any action.
