Vol. 157 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Differential Rents in Cork.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received from the Cork City manager proposals for amending the method of assessing differential rents on Cork Corporation houses, and, if so, if he will state (a) the nature of the proposals, (b) when they were submitted for sanction, (c) the cause of the delay in arriving at a decision, and (d) when a decision will be given.

On 4th January last the housing authority requested my sanction to an alteration in the method of assessment of family income for the purposes of its differential rents scheme by allowing a deduction from income of 5/- per week in respect of each child under 16 years of age after the second in a household. It was stated at the same time that the matter of amendments to the rents scheme would again come up for consideration when the corporation's estimates for 1956-57 were being considered, in view of the fact that the effect of the proposal would be to reduce the corporation's rental income by £6,000 a year. Further examination of the proposals made in January was accordingly deferred in my Department pending receipt of information as to the corporation's further views on the matter following the review referred to. No further information has so far been received.
