Vol. 157 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Housing Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the cause of the delay in erecting houses at Newtownshandrum village, County Cork.

I am informed by the Cork County Council that delay in commencement of work on the erection of the houses at Newtownshandrum is due to the fact that the approved contractors have not yet supplied certain information which is an essential preliminary to the signing of contract documents.

Is the Minister prepared to direct the assistant county manager to proceed immediately with the work in view of the fact that the housing site was taken over by the council in 1947?

The Deputy will appreciate that it is essential that contract documents should be signed, sealed and delivered prior to the commencement of the work, otherwise no proper contract could be entered into. I understand further that the contractor is being pressed to give the necessary information to the local authority's legal adviser to enable him to prepare the contract documents.

Will the Minister state who is pressing the contractor?

The local authority.

Which is the assistant county manager. No houses have been built in North Cork since 1953.

I gave sanction to the proposal in the month of January last.
