Vol. 157 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disemployment at C.I.E. Works.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of C.I.E. workers employed at the Inchicore Works (a) who have been disemployed since 1st January, 1955, and (b) whose employment is likely to be terminated on grounds of redundancy between now and the end of this year.

I am informed by C.I.E. that the answer to (a) is 65, and that the forecast for (b) is 88.

May I ask the Minister whether he does not relate disemployment at Inchicore with the vast quantities of materials now being imported by C.I.E. and which were previously manufactured or prepared at Inchicore?

The Deputy asked for facts and figures and the Deputy did not put that in his question.

I know the number of men disemployed and I now ask a supplementary question of the Minister, whether he relates that number to the vast quantity of imports made by C.I.E.

That is not relevant to the question which appears on the Order Paper. That should have been put on the question.

How could I put it in, until I knew the facts?

It could have been put in.

The supplementary has now been put and failure to answer it might carry the implication that the statements in the supplementary were correct.

I cannot see how the Minister would be in order in answering a question which I have ruled out of order.

I bow to your ruling, Sir, but I would like to say that the Deputy's assumption is not correct.
