Vol. 157 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gramophone Records' Price Freeze.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the unemployment caused in the gramophone record trade, he is now prepared to revoke the Emergency Powers Order of 20th April freezing the price of records.

The Gramophone Records (Maximum Prices) Order, 1956, was made by me on the 20th March, 1956, in order to protect the public against the action of traders who attempted to charge increased prices for gramophone records which had not been subjected to the special import levy. I informed the principal firms of gramophone distributors that I would be prepared to consider the revocation of the Order if they each gave an undertaking that they would sell at the old prices their stocks of records which have not borne the special import levy. In the case of one of the firms concerned, I still await the guarantee.
