Vol. 158 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Carrageen and Sea-rods.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of each of the years 1948 to 1956, inclusive, (a) the weight of sea-rods and carrageen, respectively, purchased by his Department, and (b) the amount paid to gatherers; and if he will make a statement on the future prospects of the carrageen industry.

The reply to (a) and (b) in the question takes the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated in the Official Report.

With regard to the prospects of the carrageen industry I see no reason to assume that any reduction will arise in the demand for carrageen for industrial or other purposes.

Following is the statement:—
