Vol. 159 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employer-Employee Discussions with Government.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make a statement on the matters recently discussed at the meeting between members of the Government, the Federated Union of Employers and the Provisional United Organisation of the Trade Union Movement.

I take it that the Deputy's question relates to the meeting which the Tánaiste, the Minister for Finance and I had on the 3rd May, 1956, with representatives of organised employers and representatives of the Provisional Committee of the Provisional United Trade Union Movement. As I stated in reply to a similar question addressed to me by the Deputy on the 15th May, there is nothing that I can usefully add to the statement issued following that meeting.

Surely the Taoiseach is aware that people outside this House are anxious to know the result of this important conference and if the Government has any solution for the economic crisis that exists at present?

The statement which was issued at that time indicated that during the meeting which lasted nearly two hours a general exchange of views took place between the representatives of the employers and of the trade union movement. It was added that it was expected that further meetings between those parties would be arranged later.

I wonder could the Minister indicate the matters that were discussed at that conference?

No, nor do I think that the best way of ensuring a successful conference. The statement indicated that there was a general exchange of views between representatives of the employers and trade unions and the Government, and that provision is being made for a continuance of these discussions if that is desirable.
