Vol. 159 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dispensary Medical Posts.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state (a) the number of dispensary medical posts throughout the State now vacant, and whether this figure is above or below average, (b) the number of such vacancies notified to the Local Appointments Commission for filling, and (c) whether there is any change in ministerial policy in relation to the replacement of dispensary doctors where vacancies have occurred.

(a) There are at present 38 vacancies for permanent district medical officers; this is approximately the number of vacancies at any particular time; (b) 29 of these vacancies have been referred to the Local Appointments Commission. In the case of eight of those offices, the commission have recommended persons for appointment, but none of the eight recommended has yet taken up duty; (c) there is no change in policy in relation to the replacement of district medical officers, where vacancies have occurred.

Is the Minister aware that recently the filling of six such posts in Donegal was dealt with by the Local Appointments Commission, and that, despite the fact that there were allegedly something over 70 applicants, we now find that two of the six posts yet remain to be filled and are being readvertised? Surely this matter deserves investigation?

As the Deputy is aware, this matter is confined to the Appointments Commission. It is not a matter in relation to which I have any functions or powers.

I presume the Minister will take note of the position and look into it, as it does seem peculiar that they cannot get six doctors out of 70.
