Vol. 159 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Dublin Bus Route.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that C.I.E. is prepared to provide a bus service for the Collins Avenue extension, Ballygall Road, East, district, as soon as the Dublin Corporation takes over the road, he will ascertain why there is reluctance on the part of the corporation to authorise the developers to complete the road, and if he will arrange to have the matter expedited so as to end the hardship imposed on the residents in the area because of the absence of adequate transport facilities.

The approval of the Minister for Local Government to the use of roads by omnibuses under Section 119 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933, arises only in respect of public roads. It is entirely a matter for the Dublin Corporation to decide when and under what conditions, if any, they will take over a road as a public road and it is not the policy of the Minister to interfere with their discretion in such cases.

Surely, as the Department responsible, where a local authority is showing undue dilatoriness, there is an obligation on the Department to expedite the matter when particular hardship is being caused?

It is entirely a matter for the local authority to take over the road.

Is it not the duty of the Department to hurry these people up?
