Vol. 159 No. 7

Written Answers. - Board of Health Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of each of the latest two years for which the information is available the number of board of health cottages, indicating separately the number erected during the British régime, and the number erected since then, and, under each heading, the total inclusive cost of such cottages, and the total amount of rents, inclusive of rates.

The numbers of cottages erected under the Labourers Acts during the financial years 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 were 2,193 and 1,648 respectively. Up to 1922 the total number of labourers' cottages provided was 41,922 and the number erected from 1922 to 31st March, 1956, was 38,623. The amount of loans raised by local authorities for the erection of labourers' cottages up to 1922 was £7,222,767 and between 1922 and the 31st March, 1956, was £28,570,438. The latter figure includes loans raised for repairs to cottages. In the post-1922 period approximately £3,500,000 was paid in grants from the Transition Development Fund towards the cost of labourers' cottages. The amounts raised during 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 by local authorities for the erection of cottages were £2,510,858 and £2,144,790 respectively. Information is not available as to the amounts of the rents of the classes of cottages specified by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state, in respect of any recent year, the total amount of rates collectable on board of health cottages erected (a) during the British régime, and (b) since then.
