Vol. 159 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portrane National School.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the Portrane National School is seriously overcrowded; whether an inspection of the site for the proposed new school has been carried out, and, if so, with what result.

I am aware that there is overcrowding in Portrane National Schools. It is proposed to erect a new girls' school and to devote the existing school premises solely to the use of the boys. As I informed the Deputy in reply to his question on the 5th June, 1956, a site was offered by the Reverend Manager for the proposed new girls' school. Inspection of this plot has been carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works, who do not, however, consider that it would be suitable for school-building purposes. The Reverend Manager has been so informed, and has been asked to make further efforts to obtain a suitable site.
