Vol. 160 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Charges.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of his statement on 5th July, 1955, that no increase would take place in electricity charges, he will state why he sanctioned the recommendations of the Prices Advisory Body for such an increase; and whether it is his intention to take such steps as are necessary to reintroduce the rural electrification subsidy, and to ensure that the increased charges will be withdrawn.

I suggest that the Deputy should have regard to the context of the statement referred to from which it should be clear that what I had in mind was that the abolition of rural electrification subsidy would not in itself necessitate any increase in electricity charges.

I do not propose to reintroduce the subsidy for rural electrification.

It is a pity that what the Minister had in mind did not come out.

It is a pity that what is in the Deputy's mind does come out.

That makes the Deputy sorry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state his reasons for sanctioning the Prices Advisory Body's recommendation to increase by 10 per cent. the charges to rural users of electricity.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has received a resolution passed by the Cork Corporation regarding increased electricity rates for domestic uses, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 30 and 31 together.

I have received a copy of the resolution referred to. The proposal by the E.S.B. to increase its charges was the subject of a public inquiry by the Prices Advisory Body on 29th June, 1956. Advance notice of the intention to hold the inquiry was given in the daily Press of the 15th June when all interested parties were invited to attend and submit evidence at the inquiry. The Prices Advisory Body examined the proposal in detail and recommended that no objection should be offered to the proposal of the E.S.B. Having considered the report, I found no reason for rejecting the recommendation. The actual manner in which the necessary extra revenue will be raised is a matter for the E.S.B. under statute.
