Vol. 160 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices of Bacon and Barley.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, with reference to the Taoiseach's statement on 5th October that farmers had the assurance that no matter how many grade A pigs they produced, or no matter how much barley they grew, they would receive a remunerative price for them all, he will state what is the remunerative price in respect of bacon and barley and how such price was arrived at; further, whether the assurance of a remunerative price applies, irrespective of quantity, to beet, wheat, milk and other agricultural products.

The present guaranteed price of 235s. per cwt. dead weight for grade A pigs and of 40s. per barrel for barley are, in my opinion, certainly remunerative. These prices were arrived at by reference to all relevant factors.

As to the second part of the question, I do not think that there is anything I need add to the very full statement made by the Taoiseach on agricultural production and prices.

The Minister has not answered me in regard to the last portion of my question. I asked what is the remunerative price with regard to beet, wheat, milk and other agricultural produce. The Taoiseach in his speech did not deal specifically with those things.

The Deputy must not have been paying attention. The last paragraph of my previous answer indicated that I would circulate particulars of the price guarantees at present in operation and these price guarantees cover beet, wheat, milk and other agricultural produce.
