Vol. 160 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clifden Cottage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he sanctioned a contract for the erection of ten cottages at Clifden, County Galway; what is the reason for the delay in carrying out the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Sanction issued on 3rd October, 1955, to the acceptance by Galway County Council of a tender for the erection of ten cottages in Clifden. The commencement of work on the scheme was considerably delayed by site difficulties. Some doubt has arisen as to the number of houses which are now required in Clifden and this matter is being investigated by the county council. Meanwhile the council have been authorised to proceed with the erection of six houses.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary be able to say whether the doubts as to the number of applicants for these cottages arose after the site difficulties had arisen?

It is a matter solely for the county council and I am awaiting their investigation of the matter.
