Vol. 160 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trentagh (Donegal) School.

asked the Minister for Education what is the position with regard to the construction of a new national school at Trentagh, County Donegal, and if he will state the percentage grant which it is proposed to make towards the cost of construction.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of the erection of a new school at Trentagh, County Donegal.

It is a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to take the necessary steps to have the school erected, and I understand that the commissioners are at present in touch with the reverend manager regarding the provision of an adequate and suitable supply of water for the school, which will be equipped with water-flushed sanitation.

It is not the practice to make public the arrangements made with the school manager in respect of grant and local contribution for any particular school.

Can the Minister not tell us the percentage grant made in this case?

No, it has not been the practice.

Is it not a fact that the Minister gave an answer in this House last July indicating that he did not know then what the percentage grant was going to be?

I probably did not.

Is it not a fact that the Minister in January of this past year had already indicated in writing what the percentage of the grant was going to be?

Indicated to whom?

Indicated to the manager of the school?

It is not the practice to make public any information with regard to arrangements made between the Department and any manager regarding the local contribution and the grant in respect of any particular school.

The Minister said he did not know what it was in July.

I probably did not know it until very recently. The communication was made only on the 9th October this year.
