Vol. 160 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Migration of Tenants.

asked the Minister for Land is he will state the number of families migrated from West Galway to the Midlands last year, and the number which it is expected will be migrated in the coming year.

Thirteen families, consisting of 107 persons in all, were migrated from West Galway to the Midlands last year.

As regards next season's programme, the Deputy will realise that such arrangements for migration as are in train are still tentative. Final decisions regarding migration each year are based on a number of factors, including the circumstances of the various applicants, the suitability of their lands for use in rearrangement schemes and the number of new holdings available for disposal.

In the circumstances, it is not possible to indicate at this stage to what extent migration from West Galway to the Midlands will be feasible in the coming spring.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission are now in a position to state whether it is proposed in the coming year to migrate any landowners from the Currane area, Achill.

I would refer the Deputy to my replies to his questions on 8th March and 15th December last, and also my reply to another question on the subject on 13th July last, in which I explained in some detail the unusual difficulties regarding migration and rearrangement which confront the Land Commission in relation to this particular district. In the circumstances the Land Commission are endeavouring to secure the rearrangement of as many holdings as possible disregarding the question of enlargement. A number of holdings in the townland of Tonragee East have recently been rearranged and further holdings will be dealt with as circumstances permit.
