Vol. 160 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Middle East—Government Policy.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is prepared to make a statement indicating the Government's policy in regard to the military attack on Egypt, and indicating the Government's policy in the United Nations Organisation in regard to recent developments in the Middle East.

On the Government's instructions Ireland's Permanent. Representative at the United Nations, Mr. F.H. Boland, voted in favour of the resolution urging an immediate cease-fire which was carried by a great majority at the emergency session of the General Assembly and which has now apparently been accepted, as far as the cease-fire is concerned, by all parties. On the many delicate questions which will arise in connection with the full implementation of this resolution the Government intends to co-operate with those friendly countries which are seeking to restore a lasting peace in the area and which respect the sovereign rights of Egypt as well as of Israel.
