Vol. 160 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Employment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will correlate the sum of £265,000 stated by him on the 25th October last to be the proposed State expenditure in the current financial year for special employment schemes, and which shows a reduction of 16 per cent. on that for the previous year, with the reduction of 85 per cent. represented by figures supplied by him on the 31st ultimo in respect of winter relief schemes; further, if he will state the allocations of the sum of £265,000 as between the various local authorities.

As stated in my reply to the Deputy's question of 31st October, 1956, there was a large carry forward to 1st April, 1956, of unexpended grants, amounting to £285,104, in respect of schemes approved prior to that date. This sum with the proposed allocation of £105,000 for new schemes makes at the present time a total of approved grants of £390,104, from which, as already stated, expenditure in the current year is estimated at £265,000.

While it is not possible at this stage to make an accurate forecast, it is expected that the expenditure of £265,000 will be incurred as follows:—

Dublin County Borough

£155,000

Cork County Borough

20,000

Limerick County Borough

15,000

Waterford County Borough

8,000

Other Urban Areas

52,000

Rural Areas

15,000
