Vol. 161 No. 2

Imposition of Duties (Confirmation of Orders) Bill, 1957—Second and Subsequent Stages.

I move that the Bill be now read a Second Time. As I explained earlier, the Government have power to impose customs duties by Order, but these Orders must be confirmed by legislation within eight months. The Orders which are scheduled under this Bill were made by the previous Government and will lapse, if not confirmed by legislation on some date in the first week of April. I have examined most of these Orders and in so far as I can see there is no good reason why they should not be confirmed. They impose and increase duties on the articles set out in column three of the Schedule. Deputies will see that they vary in importance but in all cases there will be agreement that they should be continued.

Has anybody in the Minister's Party any objection to No. 227?

We are proposing that the Order be confirmed.

Question put and agreed to.
Agreed to take remaining Stages now.
Bill passed through Committee, reported without amendment, received for final consideration and passed.

This is a Money Bill within the meaning of Article 22 of the Constitution.
