Vol. 161 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tuberculosis Death Rate.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state (1) the annual death rate from tuberculosis (all forms) in each of the years 1932 to 1942 and 1948 to 1956, inclusive, (2) the total number of deaths from tuberculosis in each of the years 1932 to 1948, inclusive, and (3) the average age of persons who died from tuberculosis in each of the years 1932 to 1948 and the average for the whole period.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated in the Official Report.

I should, however, say now that, in order to give the complete picture, I have included the death rate figures in respect of the years 1943 to 1947 when a downward trend had already begun to manifest itself as a result of the special emergency steps taken by the Government at the time to ensure that nourishing food and other necessities would be available to all citizens, including, in particular, the poorer classes who otherwise might have found it impossible to obtain them.

The statement is as follows:—
