Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lime Subsidy.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total amount paid out of the Grant Counterpart Fund for lime subsidy to C.I.E. and the Irish Sugar Company, respectively, for each of the years 1948/49 to 1956/57, inclusive, and the total amount of the subsidy at present unexpended.

The use of Grant Counterpart moneys for the ground limestone transport subsidy scheme commenced at the end of March, 1955, when the relevant Agreement with the United States authorities took effect. The total amount paid to C.I.E. from these moneys was £517,127 3s. 9d. in the year 1955/56 and £532,894 2s. 9d. in the year 1956/57; and the total amount similarly paid to Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann was £113,672 0s. 8d. in the year 1955/56 and £84,647 4s. 1d. in the year 1956/57.

The unexpended balance of the Grant Counterpart moneys for the scheme on 1st April, 1957, was £501,659 8s. 9d.
