Vol. 161 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Irish Assembled Cars.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what effect the withdrawal of the levy and the increase in the customs duty will have on the price of each make of car assembled here.

The net result of the withdrawal of the levy and the increase in the customs duty is a decrease in customs charges on motor vehicle bodies and chassis aggregates of 10 per cent. and 7½ per cent. respectively. I cannot say how car prices may vary as a result.

It is making a temporary imposition into a permanent imposition.

And removing the element of uncertainty.

There was no element of uncertainty.
