Vol. 161 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Priority in Land Division.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will use his good offices with the Land Commission so that landless men and cottiers will be given a higher priority by the Land Commission in the allocation of divided lands.

In the very rare cases where after making enlargements and providing migrants with holdings there is sufficient land available, landless men and cottiers are considered for allotments.

Under the present arrangements, the number of such persons qualifying for allotments would be very small indeed. However, in my projected study of the various activities of the Land Commission, I will see whether greater provision than heretofore can be made by the Land Commission for progressive persons within the classes of applicants mentioned by the Deputy.

Any change made would involve radical alterations in the methods adopted for selection, as an enormous number of persons would present themselves as prospective allottees.

Arising from the Minister's speech last night, does the Minister consider it proper to use his good offices as quoted in the question?

I think I did explain that in considerable detail on the Estimate.

I do not think it is proper phrasing.
