Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prize Bonds.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount subscribed for Prize Bonds, indicating the amount subscribed through the Post Office and the commercial banks, respectively, the amount of national loan converted into such bonds and the amounts of Savings Certificates and Post Office Savings Bank deposits encashed for investment in Prize Bonds.

The total amount subscribed for Prize Bonds was £5,440,000, of which £1,800,000 was subscribed through the Post Office and £3,350,000 through the commercial banks. The balance was subscribed through stock-brokers and savings banks.

£12,850 Stock of the 5½ per cent. National Loan, 1966 was converted into Prize Bonds.

The amount of Savings Certificates and Post Office Savings Bank deposits encashed for investment in Prize Bonds is estimated at approximately £500,000.

Then it was all mostly new savings?

Of the £5,500,000, approximately £500,000 was withdrawn from former savings.
