Vol. 161 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Presiding Officers and Poll Clerks.

asked the Minister for Local Government by whom presiding officers and poll clerks at elections are appointed, what are the qualifications for such appointments, and whether there are any age limits for applicants.

Presiding officers and poll clerks at elections are appointed by the returning officers on the occasion of each election. There are no fixed qualifications or age limits for these appointments. The returning officer is statutorily responsible for the proper conduct of the election and is allowed full discretion in the appointment of the staff therefor, subject to the law which prohibits the employment by him of anyone who has been employed by any other person in or about the election.
