Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National School Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total number of (a) trained teachers in national schools, (b) untrained lay teachers in national schools, (c) trained teachers, who are members of religious orders, teaching in national schools, and (d) untrained teachers, who are members of religious orders, teaching in national schools.

The total number of teachers on the staffs of national schools on 30th June, 1956 (excluding supernumeraries) was 13,262 of whom 10,244 were trained and 3,018 untrained. Of the trained teachers 8,319 were lay and 1,925 were members of religious communities; of the 3,018 untrained teachers, 2,113 were lay and 905 were members of religious communities. Of the 2,113 untrained lay teachers 1,287 were junior assistant mistresses (normally an untrained class) and of the 905 untrained teachers who were members of religious communities 450 were either awaiting training or awaiting the completion of training.
