Vol. 161 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Posts and Telegraphs: Appointments and Transfers.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has cancelled any appointments or transfers made by his predecessor, and, if so, if he will state the particulars thereof and the circumstances in which he took such action.

I can trace only one case of the kind the Deputy appears to have in mind. In that, the proposed transfer of an auxiliary postman from one office to another was cancelled. The officer concerned had been appointed to his present office on the condition— which he had accepted—that he would reside within a reasonable distance of it and he asked for the transfer on the grounds, in effect, that he had not complied with that condition and was residing near the other office. In the circumstances, I decided that the claims of local unemployed men should be given first consideration and the employment exchange is being approached to submit names in the usual way.
