Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mining Operations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state for what minerals and in what areas, so far as his Department is aware, are (a) surveying, (b) exploration work, and (c) mining being carried on at present.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report a statement giving the information requested by the Deputy.

Following is the statement:—

Surveying, exploration work, and mining are being carried out on the following minerals in the undermentioned areas.

(a) Surveying

Copper at Hollyford, Co. Tipperary, in the Roaring Water Bay district, Co. Cork, on Valentia Island, Co. Kerry, and at Coad, Co. Kerry.

Copper and lead at Kenmare, Co. Kerry, and on the Twigspark district, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim.

Copper, lead and zinc at Caim, Co. Wexford.

Copper, lead and molybdenite in West Donegal.

Copper and barytes in south-west Cork.

Copper at Allihies, Co. Cork.

Lead and zinc in the Inistioge district, Co. Kilkenny, at Barrystown, Co. Wexford, and in East Clare.

Lead at Ballycorus, Co. Dublin, at Carhoon, Co. Galway, and at Annagh, Castlemaine, Co. Kerry.

Coal in the Connaught and the Munster Coalfields.

(b) Exploration Work

Copper at Bunmahon, Co. Waterford, and at Beauparc, Co. Meath.

Copper, lead, zinc and molybdenite in West Galway.

Copper, lead and zinc in West Mayo.

Lead, zinc and oxide zinc ores at Silvermines, Co. Tipperary.

Lead and zinc at Glendalough, Co. Wicklow.

Lead in the Tassan and neighbouring districts, Co. Monaghan.

Antimony and gold at Clontibret, Co. Monaghan.

Gold in the Gold Mines Valley, Co. Wicklow.

Gypsum in the Kingscourt-Carrickmacross district, Counties Meath and Monaghan.

Coal in the Connaught, Leinster and Munster Coalfields.

(c) Mining (and/or development)

Lead and zinc at Abbeytown, Ballysodare, Co. Sligo.

Lead and barytes at Shalce, Silvermines, Co. Tipperary.

Copper and iron pyrites at Avoca, Co. Wicklow.

Gypsum in the Kingscourt-Carrickmacross district, Counties Meath and Monaghan.

Barytes at Benbulben, Co. Sligo.

Coal in the Connaught, Leinster and Tipperary Coalfields.

Fireclay in the Leinster Coalfield.
