Vol. 161 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Minister for Health (Mr. MacEntee):

(a) Grants towards the deficits of voluntary hospitals in the City of Dublin, in common with grants for capital and other purposes to voluntary and local authority hospitals generally, are paid from the Hospitals' Trust Fund. During the financial years 1953-54 to 1956-57 the ordinary income of that Fund was not sufficient to meet the outgoings, and it was necessary to supplement the income by subventions from the Exchequer, which in the four years amounted to £6,780,000. The issues from the Fund in respect of deficit grants to Dublin City hospitals during those years are shown in the tabular statement which, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose, with your permission, to circulate with the Official Report.
(b) The accounting year of the hospitals participating in the scheme for deficit grants from the Hospitals' Trust Fund is the calendar year. The total deficits of all the participating voluntary hospitals for the years 1955, 1945 and 1935 were, respectively, £958,825, £240,510 and £73,762.
Following is the statement:—
