I am informed by the E.S.B. that the number of rural areas to which electricity supply was extended in the year ended 31st March, 1957, was 80. Of these 54 areas were completed before the end of September and 26 areas in the remaining half of the year. This slowing down of the rate of development was attributed by the E.S.B. to the stringent capital position.
