Vol. 161 No. 9

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Servants' Salary and Pension Increases.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the estimated annual cost of salary increases to public servants, including civil servants, teachers, members of the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces, to compensate them for increased living costs as a result of the abolition of the food subsidies.

I cannot see that any purpose would be served by compiling hypothetical figures which I trust will not be required.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the annual cost of increasing the pensions of retired civil servants and local government employees to compensate them for the rise in the cost of living consequent on the abolition of the food subsidies.

For the general reasons explained in my Budget Speech, it is not intended to increase the pensions mentioned by the Deputy in order to offset the effect of the abolition of the food subsidies. Accordingly, no estimate of the cost of doing so has been made.
