Vol. 161 No. 12

Social Welfare Bill, 1957—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to provide for increases in the rates of pensions under the Old Age Pensions Acts, 1908 to 1955, unemployment assistance under the Unemployment Assistance Acts, 1933 to 1952 and widows' (non-contributory) pensions under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts, 1935 to 1955.— (Minister for Finance.)

When is it proposed to take the Second Stage?

On Thursday. The Bill will be circulated to-night.

Could the Government not make up their minds as to what they want to do? The Tánaiste has just said the House will not sit on Thursday.

That refers to the following week.

Then it is proposed to take the Second Stage on the day after to-morrow?

We will wait and see the Bill.

The Second Stage could be ordered provisionally for Thursday.

Second Stage ordered for Thursday, 23rd May, 1957.
