Vol. 161 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Outward Capital Movements.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give detailed particulars of the "other capital transactions", amounting to £11,190,000 for outward capital movements, in the recently published estimates of the balance of international payments for 1956, and, in particular, how much of this sum constitutes a move in deposits of the Irish commercial banks.

It is not possible to give the information asked for in respect of the components of Item 9, "other capital transactions", of the Balance of International Payments Statement without disclosing information which was made available on a confidential basis.

As regards the types of transactions covered by Item 9, I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to Deputy Larkin on 19th April, 1956, with regard to a similar question. As was indicated in that reply, Item 9 includes an estimate of the amount of investment by externs in this country and is also affected by adjustments in respect of the valuation of investments. The revaluation of external holdings and capital loss on the disposal of such holdings were factors of special significance in 1955 and 1956.
