Vol. 161 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Facilities for Oil Tankers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the tendency by maritime nations to concentrate on tankers of higher tonnage for imports of oil, suitable arrangements have been made to enable such tankers to defuel in Irish ports; and furthermore, whether any proposals have been received in his Department from outside interests to meet these envisaged requirements.

No representations have been made to me by the interests directly concerned, either inside or outside the country, that the existing terminal facilities for oil tankers in Irish ports are unsuitable or inadequate to their requirements.

Could the Minister indicate if there is any deep water harbour in this country? I understand there is one in the River Shannon. What size and draught of tanker is it capable of taking?

That seems to be a separate question.

I asked a question about a deep water harbour.

Everything arising out of a deep water harbour does not arise on this question.

I cannot see any answer to this question.

Would the Minister state what steps have been taken to deepen the Galway docks?

All I can say is that something will be done about it other than talk.

The Minister has been very promising for the last few months over the phone.

I was not nearly half as promising as my predecessor.

It was not in writing; it was over the phone.
