Vol. 162 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reopening of Tipperary Mines.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider reopening the mines at Killeen, Lackamore, Tipperary, in view of the fact that the geological survey shows them to be the best in the country, and that they would provide much needed employment in the Newport area.

The reopening of the mines referred to would be a matter for private enterprise. I may say, however, that an undertaking to grant prospecting facilities under the Minerals Development Act, 1940, has been given to a company in respect of an area in County Tipperary which includes Killeen and Lackamore. Whether such exploration and development work as may be undertaken will cover the copper deposits referred to by the Deputy will be a matter for the company to decide.

On what date was it given?

Some months ago, I think.

It was prior to the 20th March?

That is all I want to bring out.
