Vol. 162 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dangers of Cigarette Smoking.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the convincing medical evidence which favours the belief that cigarette smoking is a major causation factor in the development of cancer of the lung, he will initiate a publicity campaign to draw the attention of the public to the grave dangers to health associated with cigarette smoking.

The results so far announced of the research which has taken place into the association between tobacco smoking and lung cancer have been the subject of widespread publicity and discussion in this country and I have no doubt that they have been noted by those concerned, who have, I presume, come to their own conclusions as to the course of action they should pursue.

I do not feel, however, that the knowledge so far made available is sufficiently complete or conclusive to justify the initiation of an officially sponsored publicity campaign on the lines indicated in the question.

I am, however, keeping the matter under close observation and should circumstances justify it, measures will be taken to safeguard the public health.

In that connection will the Minister also cause inquiry to be made into the possible effects of diesel fumes and ensure that the danger of these two sources is adequately examined?

That is a separate question.

And the advantages of smoking through a holder.

They are well known.

That is purely for artistic purposes.
