Vol. 162 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Milling Accounts.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of his decision to control the price of bread, and to assist in keeping the price as low as possible, he will take steps to implement the recommendation of the Flour and Bread Committee, 1956, that the flour milling industry should, as a minimum requirement, submit financial accounts on a uniform basis for 1956-57.

As I stated in reply to a question by the Deputy on the 29th May, the recommendation of the Flour and Bread Committee to which he refers was directly related to the administration of subsidy, and now that subsidy has been discountinue it does not call for a decision by me. I have no power to compel flour millers to prepare their accounts in any particular form and, with the discontinuance of subsidy, I have no sufficient reason for pressing them to do so.
