Vol. 162 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disemployment on G.N.R.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the estimated number of persons of each grade in the State who will lose their employment with the G.N.R. Co. in consequence of the closing down in the near future of three cross-Border railway services.

I would refer the Deputy to the Report of the Inquiry held by the Chairmen of the Transport Tribunals into the proposal to terminate the services on these cross-Border lines, in which particulars of the anticipated redundancy are given on page 50. The Report (P. No. 3809) was laid on the Table of the House on 23rd October, 1956.

I understand from the G.N.R. Board that the figures given in the Report were estimates which the board had made in the light of the situation then prevailing and that it would be impossible to give firm figures pending the working out of revised timetables and other arrangements.
