Vol. 163 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clothes Peg Tariff.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the protection afforded for the manufacture of wooden clothes pegs in this country by way of duty has not proved sufficient, and there have been importations of clothes pegs over the last few months on which duty has been paid; and whether, in the interest of the cottage industry which was set up at Collon, County Louth, and to abate the unemployment that has been caused at Ardee, County Louth, he will consider increasing the rate of duty.

I am aware that there have been some importations of wooden clothes pegs in recent months.

If the manufacturers submit to me evidence of importations at prices with which for reasons not within their control they cannot compete, I will consider the matter.
