Vol. 164 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bus Stops.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that bus stops in Dublin City are in many cases situated in close proximity to road junctions, making it necessary in some cases for buses to cross lines of traffic sharply in order to make a right hand turn; and that many stops are situated on bends or within 30 feet of a road junction; and, if so, if he will ensure that all such bus stops are reviewed by the Garda Síochána in the interests of greater road safety.

Authority to appoint bus stops is vested by law in the Commissioner, Garda Síochána. He has informed me that road safety is always a dominant factor in siting bus stops, that their location in Dublin City is constantly under review in consultation with the transport companies and that any complaint about a particular stop is promptly investigated.

Of course, several factors have to be taken into consideration in locating a bus stop and it is not always possible to find a site on a particular street which, although it may be suitable generally for the public convenience, will not have some drawback.
