Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castletownberehaven Fishing Centre.

asked the Minister for Lands whether, during his recent visit to Castletownberehaven, he satisfied himself that the port was suitable for development as a major fishing centre; and what steps he proposes to take to have the port developed.

My visit to Castletownberehaven served to indicate to me that prima facie it was among the ports which might be capable of greater development as a fishing centre. Proposals are being examined in my Department, in consultation with the Office of Public Works and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara, for the execution of harbour works and shore installations there, but it is too early to indicate precisely what form of works may eventually be decided upon. Local initiative and enterprise are, of course, vital factors in the development of any port and I am encouraged to believe that Castletownbere will not in future be lacking in these respects.
