Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commemoration Stamps.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of different series of commemoration stamps issued by his Department within the past five years, and the cost to the State of each such issue.

The information required by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Eight series of commemorative stamps were issued within the past five years. The cost of producing each issue was as follows:—

Year

Issue

Cost

£

1953

An Tóstal

2,248

1953

Robert Emmet, 150th Anniversary

6,348

1954

Marian Year

7,387

1954

Centenary of Newman's Rectorship of the Catholic University of Ireland

1,515

1956

Unveiling of Statue of Commodore John Barry

9,178

1957

Centenary of birth of John Redmond

Produced together

1957

Centenary of birth of Tomás Ó Criomhthain

5,984

1957

Centenary of death of Admiral William Brown

1,400(estimated)

The cost of producing these issues has, however, been more than offset by reduced user of stamps of the permanent series and by revenue from philatelic sales.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will ensure that stamps, other than those of the Redmond issue, will be made available at all post offices to facilitate persons who object to purchasing this particular issue.

The question does not now arise as the period of issue of the Redmond stamp has expired.

That is a question that should not have been asked. It is the question of a miserable schoolboy.

Would the Deputy mind his own business?

What would you expect from a pig but a grunt?
